Abstract (en)
The intensity of peer conflicts is a phenomenon that needs to be
more present in public discourse. This research examines the
management of the intensity of peer conflicts in a contemporary
school. Peer conflicts can be of different intensity, and it is important
to manage them so that they do not escalate into violent behavior.
With planning and realization of counselling and pedagogical work,
guiding counselling interviews, monitoring and evaluating effects of
counselling and pedagogical work, socially acceptable behaviour of
students is encouraged and the intensity of peer conflicts is placed
under management. The representation of students' personal
characteristics and their willingness for peer mediation enable
students to become participants in managing the intensity of peer
conflicts. Planning activities within educational programs has a
preventive effect on the intensity of peer conflicts.
The sample encompas students of elementary and secondary
schools, homeroom teachers, pedagogues and psychologists from the
territory of the city of Nis. Research instruments were designed for
students, homeroom teacher and professional associates. A checklist
for educational programs analysis was created.
The results indicate that schools manage the intensity of peer
conflicts. Peer conflicts are not very intense. In counseling and
pedagogical work, adequate procedures are used even for peer
conflicts of lower intensity. Working on students' negative emotions
and activities following a counseling conversation are associated
with a decrease in perceptions of the intensity of peer conflict.
Students have mediation competence, but it needs to be at a higher
level of development. Students with more developed social and
emotional competencies perceive greater intensity of peer conflicts.
Students who perceive higher intensity of peer conflicts are also
more prepared to lead the mediation process. Greater control of
students' emotions and behavior leads to a decrease in the intensity
of conflicts with friends and peers. Girls are more socially and
emotionally competent than boys, as are students who participate in
student communities. Students' willingness to conduct peer
mediation decreases with age, but increases with higher academic
success. Girls are more prepared to conduct peer mediation, as are
students who use a collaborative style in conflicts. By improving
educational programs, an effective model for managing the intensity
of peer conflicts in school can be created.
