Abstract (en)
Introduction. Timely and accurate diagnosis of salivary gland tumors is of
paramount importance in maxillofacial surgery, especially considering the
increase in the number of these tumors worldwide in the last ten years.
Thermal imaging, as a non-invasive and painless method, represents a
challenge for research and application in the diagnosis of salivary gland
tumors in order to complement the spectrum of auxiliary diagnostic
methods. Objective: The main objective of this doctoral dissertation is to
examine the possibility and importance of using a thermal imaging camera
as a reliable auxiliary diagnostic tool in a specific group of patients with
salivary gland tumors. Material and methods. The dissertation is a
prospective clinical study conducted at the maxillofacial surgery
department of the Clinic for Dental Medicine in Niš in the period from
01.01. 2021 to 31.12. 2023. During the clinical trial, 235 subjects were
included, divided into two large groups. The first group consisted of 95
patients with tumor changes in the salivary glands, while the second group
included 140 subjects without manifest changes in the salivary glands
(control group). Results and conclusions. There are strong positive
correlations with a high statistically significant difference in temperature
between the tumor-affected and unaffected side (tp<0.001), i.e. the tumor
process significantly increases the temperature in the region in which it is
located. Temperatures measured above malignant tumors are statistically
significantly higher than temperatures measured above benign tumors
(p=0.010). The conclusions showed that registering the temperature
difference using a thermal imaging camera can be a significant indicator of
the presence/absence of a tumor, and the thermal imaging camera itself may
have the potential to become an auxiliary diagnostic tool in the detection of
salivary gland tumors.
