Abstract (en)
In the paper ,,The Fantastic in the Epoche of Realism in Serbian Literature” the issue of fantasy is examined conceptually and terminologically, genre-wise, literary-historically, and typologically.
The term fantastic means what is apparent, non-existent in reality, a product of imagination. It deconstructs ontological norms and activates the supernatural world. It introduces unreal, surreal and miraculous elements and brings readers to a stage of uncertainty regarding the interpretation of the relationship between reality and imagination. Todorov explains the fantastic as the duration of the observer's uncertainty when explaining an encounter with a supernatural. It introduces genres of the weird and wonderful that are realized depending on the reader's reception.. Lubomir Doležel's theory of possible worlds introduces narrative modalities, fictional actors, the function of authentication directly applicable to the problem of fantastic.
Plato distinguishes between two types of imitative art, one that produces copies and the other that creates semblance. Aristotle points to the dimension of the supernatural in the context of the theory of tragedy in which the characters of gods, demigods and heroes appear. Realist criticism denies the share of fiction. Psychoanalysis introduces the notion of the uncanny. Bakhtin singles out menipe as a genre, one of the characteristics of which is precisely fantasy. Russian formalism advocates the defamiliarization of perception, which correlates with the fantastic, which brings novelty to perception from which it is inseparable. Representatives of unnatural narratology Brian Richardson, Henrik Nielsen, Jan Alber take as the basic criterion for unnatural its violation of mimetic conventions. Marie-Laure Ryan's theory of possible worlds points to realizations between three modal systems: the real world, the real world of the text, and the alternative
possible world based on the accessibility relations between these worlds.
Structural features include: narrative modalities, fictional actors, chronotope, authentication, the real and alternative world of the text, and the reading audience. Realistic and fantastic worlds are viewed as equally fictional. The relation between folkloric genres with elements of fantasy (fairy tale, legend, humorous story) and realist short stories is established. The role of fantasy in the subjectivization and psychologization of the hero's state is affirmed through Lacan's hypothesis about the linguistic system, interpreted in the context of Foucault’s discourse analysis, and intertwined with cultural theorists' concepts such as Fredric Jameson and Jean Baudrillard. The aim is to contribute to the study of the problem of fantasy from the perspective of contemporary theories, while re-evaluating marginalized authors.
