Abstract (en)
The connection and interdependence of political institutions and FDI in Serbia and other selected countries in transition of Central and Eastern Europe is multiple and complex due to: the complexity of the political institutions themselves shaping the political, legal and economic system, the way political decisions are made and implemented, the dynamics and depth of institutional changes, and control over economic resources (capacities) and income; the complexities of FDI as a form of capital trend that differ from each other in terms of goals, motives, determinants, scope and effects, as well as the fact that these are countries that are in different stages of transition and implementation of institutional reforms, which largely determines the determinants and effects of FDI inflows in them. Research has proven that the relationship between democratic institutions and FDI is complex, while the results of empirical analyses indicate that the largest part of variations in the volume of FDI can be explained by the previous values of this variable, while smaller percentages of variations can be explained by the influence of the remaining factors - economic growth, institutional stability and efficiency public administration. Such results can be explained by the fact that the structure of FDI is dominated by the types of investment that are least sensitive to the quality of political institutions. This does not imply that the institutional environment has no influence on the attraction of FDI. With the change in the structure of FDI, the relative importance of the factors that decisively influence the inflow of FDI also change. In this sense, the creation of high-quality political institutions has a long-term, strategic importance for economic and social development, the processes of European and other integrations of Serbia and other observed countries, as well as for attracting FDI in the future.
