Architectural design
Abstract (en)
In the last three decades, the way of designing health facilities in international architectural practice has changed considerably, through accepting the idea that decisions made in the design process are based on credible scientific research, in order to create a space that has healing characteristics. This process is known as "evidence-based design."
Through theoretical frameworks, this research deals with the determination and classification of the characteristic elements of the space of the healthcare inpatient units - the modern patient room, which participate in the creation of an architectural space that promotes treatment. In order to improve the space of the existing patient rooms in the inpatient healthcare institutions of Serbia which would take on the characteristics of an environment that helps treatment, the methodology of architectural evaluation of the existing elements of the patient room space, the assessment of patients' satisfaction with that space and the established preference of patients for improving the room, was determined and introduced in four healthcare institutions. The results of the research helped determine the functional, ambient and visual elements of the design, the improvement of which transforms the patient room into a unit for accommodating and caring for patients. It was also proposed to automate the process of architectural evaluation of the elements of interior design of the existing stock of patient rooms by creating software according to the developed algorithm. The end result of the research are two prototypes of modern units for accommodation and care of patients in Serbian hospitals, which derive from the recommendations of evidence-based
design and the established preferences of patients in Serbia. The results of the research facilitate the approach in determining and mitigating the deficiencies of functional, visual and other elements in the existing stock and recommend the use of developed prototypes in newly designed facilities. The results of the research are widely applicable even outside the borders of Serbia.
