Abstract (en)
The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to examine the process of
political rapprochement between Serbia and Bulgaria in the period
from 1908 to 1912. The research focuses on the course of diplomatic
negotiations between the two countries, with particular emphasis on
resolving the Macedonian question, which represented the main
obstacle to closer relations. Special attention is devoted to the roles of
key actors — the Serbian diplomat and prime minister Milovan
Milovanović, and the Bulgarian prime minister Ivan Geshov —
whose actions were crucial in building mutual trust between Sofia
and Belgrade. The study provides a detailed analysis of negotiations
concerning political and military cooperation, as well as the attitudes
of state, political, and intellectual elites in both countries. It also
examines the influence of the Albanian question on Bulgarian-
Serbian relations, as well as the geopolitical ambitions of the Great
Powers — primarily Russia, which supported rapprochement, and
Austria-Hungary, which opposed it. The Annexation Crisis of 1908 is
identified as a turning point in the relations between the two
countries, as it opened space for mutual cooperation and future joint
action. Through the examination of available archival materials and
relevant literature, the study concludes that friendly relations between
Serbia and Bulgaria were a fundamental prerequisite for the creation
of the Balkan Alliance. The compromise regarding Macedonia proved
to be the key factor in reaching an agreement. The treaty between
Serbia and Bulgaria represented the main link in the effort to liberate
the Balkan Peninsula from the Ottoman Empire.
