Abstract (en)
The negative effects of urbanization, as well as the general need for existing building renovation, indicate the necessity of the application of new approaches and environmentally friendly concepts in the field of architecture, with the aim of protecting the environment. Considering the characteristics of the already densely built urban areas, green roofs are recognized as one of the significant measures for improving existing buildings in the context of flat roof renovation. With regard to this, the research is based on an assessment of the impact and suitability of the application of green roofs in the local context, as well as at the regional level, and includes the analysis and possibilities of their implementation from a structural aspect, while respecting the basic postulates of sustainable development. In order to determine the justifiability of the improvement of existing flat roofs with green roof systems, in relation to improvement by restoration, an integrative model for the structural improvement of existing buildings has been created for green roof concept implementation. Based on the established set of criteria, within the first phase, the fulfilment of conditions has been determined for the application of green roofs at the level of an urban area, and at the level of a building. One of the key criteria is the fulfilment of the load capacity and the usability of the structure due to new load. In the case when the structure has an insufficient load capacity, or if the usability parameters are not met, strengthening methods for supporting elements are considered. The second phase refers to multi-criteria decision-making, which is implemented using the analytical hierarchical process as a decision-support tool for the election of an optimal manner of improving the roof system. The defined methodological procedure transcends the framework of the approaches applied to date in the domain of building renovation, and includes relevant parameters from other research fields. Considering the problem in a comprehensive manner is important for the improvement of the methodology of sustainable design and construction. The results of model verification indicate the advantages of green roof implementation, which could be one of the significant arguments for setting the legislation in this area.
