Housing

The dissertation deals with the research of the structure of architectonic space of the residential buildings which architectonic set is based on the space within a space concept, i.e. on the idea of insertion of a certain space within another defined space. The emphasis is given to the investigation of the mentioned concept in a single-family housing, with the indication that its application is also suitable in multi-family housing, which is offered as a possible subject for the further research. The large part of the research is based on analysis of the different architectural projects, designed by different authors, in which is noticeable the space within a space concept, applied consciously or as a result of other ideas and circumstances, i.e. directly or indirectly. The selected projects were taken as representative examples, and the basic criterion by which they were chosen is the criterion of diversity of design ideas, in order to obtain a more comprehensive overview and to facilitate the synthesis of the basic characteristics of the concept, its principles and contextual conditions of its use. Through analysis and synthesis, as well as comparison based on the established criteria, one makes classifications of the space within a space concept and defines basic organizational schemes. The starting hypothesis in the research is that the perception of space is personal and that each individual observes the space in his own way, which through the investigation of the space within a space concept proves as correct and results in the inability of defining a concrete and strict program matrix applicable in practice. The concept of space within a space is seen as an interesting approach to architectural design, which offers solutions different from conventional ones, whereby one not only ascertains benefits, but also the possible limitations that follow it. Its applicability primarily excels in connecting the interior and exterior, in a variant of an energy efficient model for housing, conversion and flexible architecture, and it is also evident preference towards artistic expression. The main goal of this research is to closely define and elaborate a specific and above all original and no ordinary conceptual designing approach to housing architecture, whose final result is creation of a complex structure of the architectonic space based on the ambivalent relationship between the spatial levels, with the idea of enriching the design, creative and artistic process, and, of course, raising the quality of the housing space to a higher level.
