Economic Development and Economic Policy
Abstract (en)
The subject of research in this doctoral dissertation is an overview of a
complex interactive functioning system of society and economy in time and space, more
precisely - the understanding of the effects of regional development policy on socio-economic
developments in the Republic of Serbia. The wide range of inherited cultural and historical,
demographic, economic, infrastructural, social and political parameters, considering natural
and geostrategic position of certain areas, have a crucial impact to the unequal regional
development of our country, which for decades was not regarded as an integral part of the
overall socio-economic development, but it is analyzed as a separate and not particularly
important aspect of the overall development. The most important aspect of this work is to
highlight the need for formulating the appropriate strategic, dynamic and programmed
approach to reduce regional imbalances in the Republic of Serbia, based on the analysis and
considering all specificities and development needs of the region, as well as complex and
living systems. Rational guided regional development policy today should be based on
comparative advantages and valorization of unused or underused development opportunities
and resources, where, in this study, we especially highlight the development potential of
migration and diaspora as a resource for local and regional development. Achieving positive
effects and mitigate the demographic disorders, as well as the correction of a lot of regional
disparities requires time. Any delay of changes makes the situation even worse, and the
demographic future of Serbia remains uncertain. In order to support the country to be
effective, it is necessary to ensure its continuity and keep the intensity for a longer period, all
this for the purpose of making balanced regional development, as well as long-term strategic
orientation. In this sense, the main objective of this doctoral thesis is proposing such a
regional development policy that would ensure a coordinated and integrated sectoral and
territorial sustainable access to the socio-economic development of Republic of Serbia.
