Waste management
Abstract (en)
The problem of choosing a sustainable waste management system is very complex.
The complexity is reflected in the large number of waste treatments which vary by
technology, efficiency in terms of obtaining energy and utilization of natural
resources, possibilities of waste volume reduction, more or less negative impact on
the environment, different costs, unequal social acceptability, etc. The selection of a
sustainable waste management system is further complicated by the existence of a
large number of sustainable development indicators that have been developed in the
world and in Serbia, and are used as criteria in sustainability assessment. In addition,
there is no one universal model that would assist decision makers in the selection of
a sustainable waste management system. Therefore, this doctoral thesis develops a
model for the sustainability assessment of waste management scenarios as a decision
support system, in order to enable decision makers to choose the sustainable waste
management scenarios, with regard to the selected criteria, namely indicators of
sustainable development and defined priorities.
For the sustainability assessment of defined waste manegement scenarios, this
model, uses a multi-criteria analysis method – the Analytical Hierarchy Process. It
proposes a set of sustainable development indicators (economic, social and
environmental indicators) that can be used for assessing the viability of waste
treatment in the Republic of Serbia. This set represents a combination of energy
indicators and indicators related to waste. Within the framework of the model for the
sustainability assessment, mathematical models are also developed so as to calculate
the value of certain economic and social indicators that take into account local
economic and social conditions.
The verification of the developed model was performed using the case study of
sustainability assessment of the developed waste management scenarios in the City
of Niš, while the validation of the model was performed using the case study of
sustainability assessment of waste management scenarios in the City of Sofia.
