Abstract (en)
Patients with diabetes mellitus have lower quality of life in almost all areas of life in comparison to general population. Complications of diabetes mellitus are predictors of the quality of life with the greatest influence in patients with diabetes.
The aim of the research is to establish the influence of acute and chronic complications on the quality of life in examinees with diabetes mellitus.
А clinical-epidemiological cross-sectional study was performed which includes 285 examinees with diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2, conducted in the diabetes department in General hospital in Leskovac. The anonymous, original questionnaire containing questions about socio-demographic data, the period of disease, therapy treatment, presence of acute and chronic complications and SF-36, EQ-5D and EQ-VAS parts. The data about presence of complications and laboratory blood and urine values have been obtained from medical documentation.
The greatest number of the examinees has been on oral hypoglycemic therapy (46.1%). The most present chronic complications have been angina pectoris (20%), diabetic polyneuropathy (74%) and retinopathy (63.5%). Hypoglycemia has been separated and independent predictive factor of lower score values for body pain (b=-0.140) and physical composite score (b=-0.118) in SF-36 questionnaire and total VAS score (b=-0.123). Angina pectoris, cardiac insufficiency and diabetic retinopathy have been the most important individual predictors of lower values of almost all subscales of SF-36, EQ-5D and EQ-VAS questionnaire.
The obtained results have shown that the presence of diabetes mellitus complications has a great influence on the quality of life of the patients. By defining the predictors of the quality of life of the patients with diabetes mellitus and modifying the variables, i.e. correction of hyperglycemia, hypertension, obesity, providing the psycho-social support, education, giving up smoking, the quality of life of the patients can be significantly increased.
